Train Chart Prepared but Ticket Still Waitlisted? Next Steps for IRCTC Users

Train Chart Prepared but Ticket Still Waitlisted? Next Steps for IRCTC Users

If the train chart is prepared and your ticket is still waitlisted (WL), you CANNOT board the train with that ticket. This applies to e-tickets booked on IRCTC or partner apps. Here’s exactly what happens, your options, and what to do for refunds or urgent travel.

If Your E-Ticket Remains Waitlisted After Charting

Once the final reservation chart is prepared—usually 3-4 hours before departure—any e-ticket that is still on the waitlist is automatically cancelled by IRCTC. You will not get a seat and are not allowed to board with this ticket, even if you have the SMS or PDF.

How to Check Your Final Ticket Status

  1. Go to the PNR Status page on findmytrain.in or the official IRCTC website/app.
  2. Enter your 10-digit PNR from your ticket.
  3. Look for status codes:
    • CNF: Confirmed, you can travel.
    • RAC: Reservation Against Cancellation, you can board and will get a seat (possibly shared).
    • WL (any number): Waitlisted, you CANNOT travel.

If your status is still WL after charting, your e-ticket is auto-cancelled. If you booked at a counter, see below.

Counter Tickets: Different Rules Apply

If you bought a physical counter ticket and it’s waitlisted after charting, you CAN still board the train, but you will not get a reserved seat. You can travel unreserved in the same class. However, you will not get a refund unless you cancel before charting.

Refund Rules for Waitlisted E-Tickets

E-tickets (online bookings):
If your waitlisted ticket does not get confirmed after the final chart, the system cancels it automatically. Refunds are processed back to your payment method—no action is needed from your side.

Booking TypeWaitlist After Chart? Can You Board?Refund?
E-ticket (IRCTC/online)YesNoAutomatic
Counter ticketYesYes (unreserved)Must cancel before charting for refund

Refunds for e-tickets are usually credited in 3-7 working days. If your refund hasn’t arrived, see our refund rules guide for next steps.

If You Still Need to Travel: What to Do After Waitlist

  1. Check for alternate trains on your route—use IRCTC or any train search app.
  2. Try Tatkal booking for urgent travel. Tatkal quota opens at 10am (AC classes) or 11am (Sleeper) the day before travel. See our Tatkal booking guide for tips.
  3. Look for unreserved/general tickets at the station if your journey is short or you don’t mind standing.
  4. If you booked through an agent, the refund will still come to your original payment method; contact your agent only if there’s a delay.

If You Accidentally Boarded With a Waitlisted E-Ticket

This is not allowed. If you are caught, you will be treated as without ticket and may face a penalty (fare + fine) or be asked to deboard. TTEs do not make exceptions for e-tickets left on the waitlist. No refund is possible in this situation, even if you are fined.

What If Chart Is Not Prepared Yet?

You can keep checking your PNR status until the chart is prepared. Sometimes, especially for late-night or early-morning trains, second/final charts are prepared 1-2 hours before departure. If your ticket moves from WL to RAC or CNF even at the last minute, you can board.

Common Cases That Cause Confusion

  • Multiple passengers on one ticket: If even one passenger on your e-ticket is confirmed/RAC after charting, only the passengers still WL are not allowed to board. Confirmed/RAC passengers can travel.
  • Partial confirmation: For e-tickets, only the waitlisted names are auto-cancelled. Others remain valid.
  • Boarding with an SMS: The SMS/PDF is not valid if waitlisted after charting—you must have at least RAC status to travel.
  • Refund not received: Wait 3-7 working days. Check your IRCTC account for status. If no refund after 7 days, see refund rules for escalation steps.
  • Trying to buy a ticket from TTE onboard: This is not possible with a waitlisted e-ticket. TTE cannot allot a seat if you are not on the chart.

Where to Escalate If Refund Is Delayed

If your refund hasn’t arrived after 7 working days, log in to your IRCTC account, go to My Transactions > Ticket Refund History, and check status. If still pending, use the official IRCTC Customer Care or file a TDR (Ticket Deposit Receipt) online. For step-by-step help, see our refund rules guide.
